Custer Gallatin National Forest Campgrounds 

Big Sky, Montana is surrounded by the 3.1 million-acre Custer Gallatin National Forest. With developed and dispersed camping available, there are options for all kinds of campers. For information about dispersed camping, check the Custer Gallatin National Forest website or call the Bozeman Ranger District office (406-522-2520) and speak to a ranger. 

If you’re going to camp in the national forest, be aware that there are no dump stations at the campgrounds. Dump stations are located in Bozeman, Ennis, and West Yellowstone.

Whenever possible, reserve campsites ahead of time—up to six months in advance—on recreation.gov. While camping in a national forest takes some research and planning, the peace and solitude are often worth it.

Red Cliff Campground 

Located on the Gallatin River, Red Cliff Campground offers campers easy access to hiking, kayaking, fishing, climbing, and wildlife viewing. Just 10 miles from Big Sky on Highway 191, Red Cliff Campground provides great tent or RV camping. There are 60 reservable sites here with plenty of mature trees for shade in the heat of summer. Vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, gravel sites, and electric hook-ups are available.

Moose Creek Flat Campground 

This small campground 11 miles from Big Sky sits in a meadow on the banks of the Gallatin River with breathtaking mountain views. While there are no electric hook-ups at Moose Creek, the campground offers fire rings, vault toilets, picnic tables, drinking water, and trash collection. Hiking, whitewater kayaking, rafting, wildlife viewing, and fishing are easy to access, and the campground even has an accessible fishing dock.

Swan Creek Campground 

South of Big Sky off Highway 191, Swan Creek Campground is tucked into a whimsical forest of fir trees. While there are no electric hook-ups, campers have access to vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire rings. Fishing, whitewater kayaking, rafting, hiking, and wildlife viewing are popular and easily accessible from this location. 

Greek Creek Campground 

This popular and convenient campground between Big Sky and Bozeman is a great spot for anglers and whitewater enthusiasts. Greek Creek has picnic tables, vault toilets, fire rings, potable water, and trash collection for campers, but no hook-ups. 

Spire Rock Campground 

With creek-side campsites, this 20-site campground is beloved for its peaceful setting and friendly on-site camp hosts. Spire Rock is located on a dirt road off Highway 191 and is only accessible by vehicle in the summer. Campsites have picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and trash collection available, but there are no water spigots. Two popular hikes—Storm Castle and Garnet Mountain Lookout—begin near the campground. 

Madison County Campgrounds and RV Parks

Historic Ennis, Montana, sits on the western side of Big Sky Resort. Popular with travelers for its authentic western feel, quaint shops, locally-owned restaurants, art galleries, exceptional hospitality, and picturesque landscapes, Ennis is also a popular destination for road trippers visiting southwest Montana.

The nearby gold rush town of Virginia City (an early capital of Montana) boasts well-preserved 19th-century buildings with interpretive displays and live reenactments.
