What to Pack For Your Trip

Packing for a desert road trip requires thoughtful preparation, for both travel essentials and season-specific clothing.

Important things for every desert trip:

  • Plenty of water

  • Healthy snacks to keep energy levels up

  • A first aid kit for minor injuries or illness

  • A physical map of the area, in case you lose GPS signal

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Day pack or small backpack

  • Camera

  • Light rain jacket or windbreaker

When packing for the area, adapt your wardrobe to the season: bring a variety of layers for spring and fall, lightweight and breathable outfits for summer, and warm layers plus waterproof boots for winter.

Antelope Canyon

One of the most iconic sites in Page is Antelope Canyon. This slot canyon, carved by millennia of water erosion, is famous for its stunning light beams and layered sandstone formations.

Expert local guides will lead you through the stunning passages, sharing fascinating insights about the geology, history, and cultural significance of the canyons. Our tour guide was fantastic and she even instructed us on how to use angles to get the best pictures.

There are two main sections to explore:

Upper Antelope Canyon

Affectionately known as "The Crack," Upper Antelope Canyon is known for its easy accessibility and photogenic light shafts that appear during mid-day.

The canyon seems to literally undulate before your eyes, and the formations are always changing, as the sandstone erodes.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Referred to as "The Corkscrew," Lower Antelope Canyon is a bit more adventurous with its narrow passageways and ladders. It's a favorite among photographers for its dramatic shapes and colors. Because of the ladders and the change in elevation, the lower canyon is perfect for those who want a bit of exercise.

Both sections offer unique experiences, and everyone seems to have an opinion on which section is best. We toured Upper Antelope Canyon and were blown away by the beauty. Each tour group gets a fun, bumpy (but safe) ride over the sand in the back of a truck to the canyons.

When planning your visit Antelope Canyon visit, it's important to know that you cannot explore it on your own. Both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are on Navajo land, and entrance is strictly regulated to protect the site and ensure visitor safety. Guided tours are mandatory.

Book your Antelope Canyon tour online – there are several operators to choose from, and all are reputable.

Monument Valley

This iconic landscape, with its towering red rock formations, has been featured in countless films and TV shows. Get a deeper understanding of Monument Valley’s history and culture and book a guided tour with a Navajo guide. They offer insights into the valley's geology, flora, fauna, and the rich traditions of the Navajo people.

The beautiful 17-mile Valley Drive offers views of famous formations like the Mittens and Merrick Butte, but due to its rough terrain, RVs and motorcycles are often not allowed on the route.

Check the Monument Valley website before you go.

Horseshoe Bend

Just a short drive from Page, Horseshoe Bend offers one of the most breathtaking views of the Colorado River. The river makes a dramatic 270-degree turn, creating a horseshoe-shaped bend that’s a photographer's dream. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to visit Horseshoe Bend. The lighting is perfect for photographs, and the temperatures are cooler.

If you have some more time to fully explore this breathtaking section of the Colorado River, consider kayaking it! Kayak the Colorado is a great company that will rent your kayaks and transport you (and your kayaks) upriver for your adventure!
